With reference to the case study and using your own research, evaluate the impact of laptops on society;
▪ Is it a reliable source, of gathering and safekeeping information.
▪ How does it affect/benefit Globalization and cultural diversity.
▪ Are laptops secure.
Drives fail, It happens. They are mechanical devices that can and will eventually fail. Some machines have design flaws that make HDD (Hard disk drive, is a non-volatile storage device which stores digitally encoded data on rapidly rotating platters with magnetic surfaces.) failures more likely. There are multiple methods that can be used to ensure the that data stored in a private laptop is secure;
▪ Password protect with a complex password
▪ Encrypt your files
▪ Consider biometrics
▪ Handle mobile media (flash drives, CD back-ups, Zip cartridges) with care.
Other (physical) ways to ensure that the information is safe in the laptop;
• Purchase tracking software in case your laptop gets stolen (recommendations to follow).
• Lock your laptop to a desk or other object when you put it down, or keep it beside you when your moving...and out of sight when you can.
• Register your laptop with the manufacturer (to provide proof of ownership if stolen).
• Lock your laptop inside a cabinet or safe at home, or in a drawer or closet in your dorm room.
• Turn off Bluetooth devices to stop thieves who search for signals in parking lots and other places.
Laptops affected Globalization, in many ways;
• the globalization of war propaganda. Serendipitous acquisition of enemy laptops has been a consistent theme of American war propaganda in the information age.
• The One laptop per child shows non profits' power, in glogalization. The plan is to design a 100-dollar laptop and get it in the hands of 150 million of the world's poorest schoolchildren.
Are laptops secure;
Laptops have become thief magnets, attracting everything from common thugs and dishonest housekeeping employees to sophisticated conmen, hi-tech crime rings, and industrial spies. In 1999 alone, over 319,000 laptops were reported stolen. Thousands more were simply misplaced or left in hotel rooms, restaurants, airports, cabs or coffee shops by busy employees rushing around. Protect your capital investment and your company's secrets by following these guidelines to better laptop security.
• Choose a secure operating system and lock it down
• Enable a strong BIOS password
• Asset Tag or Engrave the laptop

Having homework alerts, answer in-class surveys and quizzes being sent to your iPods/iPhone in a daily basis will keep the students up to date with their classes and exams. If a student was absent or missed notes from a lecture then the student won’t have an excuse for missing deadlines or not being informed of a test. As for the disadvantages that this issue will inflict on the students, it will allow them to miss lectures or skip school, with a reassuring feeling that they will be updated with the important issues or quiz updates they missed. They will also receive their homework or any new assigned homework via the e-mail (through the iPhone). Not only are students being distracted by their laptops ACU wants to provide them with iPods, and iPhones “Because 93 per cent of ACU students bring their own computers with them to college, we are choosing to take them to the next level by providing converged mobile devices." Everything the students need to accomplish with their iPhones, they can probably do with their laptops. They can receive constant updates on tests, lectures and assignments through their e-mail. What ACU wants to achieve through this release of iPhones to all the students is probably the attention (from the press) to the university. The disadvantages to this issue is far more critical than the advantages, because if university students start missing school in a regular basis then it will develop into a habit and more people will relay on the iPone to receive all the necessary updates from their university lecture. Through recent study, which states “between class absence and academic performance of students stemming from the likely influence of effort and ability on both absence and performance,” the student’s grades are affected by their presence and attention in class. Therefore to achieve the highest grade possible, students have to stop relaying on receiving updates on their iPhones and continue showing up in University.

Criteria A (2)
This portfolio addresses the issue of universities relaying on technology, such as the iPhone and the iPods to “homework alerts, answer in-class surveys, quizzes and to check their meal and account balances.” (Provenzano, 2008) It gives the students a chance to miss school or specific lectures and ask their friends to send them a summary of the lecture through the iPhone. It is estimated that “2.14 billion” people use the mobile phone (or has a subscription) around the world. (wikipedia, 2008) Therefore the ethical issue in this case is that people will prefer studying from home and relaying on electronics to transmit the necessary information from the lectures to them through the iPhone or the IPod. This issue is very important and critical especially in this day and age, because in the 21st century there is a rapid annual increase of young teenagers and adults using advance technology to receive daily updates whch has surpassed the news and mail, it has reached a point were universities are relaying on mobiles to communicate on a daily basis with their students, giving them constant updates and indirectly telling them that they can miss school and still receive update of what they missed.

criteria B
The development through technology has allowed this issue to occur which would probably have a snowball effect and attract more universities to this new advance. Though it does affect the students negatively because that gives them more reason to miss school or miss a lecture. In this case the technology of the iPod, are devices to get homework alerts, answer in-class surveys and quizzes and to check their meal and account balances. There also is very minimal privacy, which may allow other people to easily access private information of the students and professors in the university. This may cause problems, which will distract the students and members of staff who are in charge. There are professional hackers that can easily access information through the Internet, and With the Safari web browser on iPhone, you can surf websites just as you do on your personal computer. You’re not limited to mobile WAP sites. Therefore anyone could hack into the iphone and manipulate or steel valuable/ personal information.
Even though the iPhone and iPod are very trendy and fashionable, there are certain limitations and privacy issues that are concerned. Because you can send and receive email from multiple email accounts on your iPhone. You are at risk that any virus can be sent. Because you are receiving information constantly from your classmates and professors your e-mail address is distributed to a large number of people. This makes it easier for a person to steal or find an iPhone and steal all the personal information, which will result in your e-mail being distributed.

Government and Politics/1
Name of Article: Obama's Speech on Race Rings True for Britain, Too.
Area of Impact: Government and Politics
Ethical Issue Involved: Senator Obama noted that, while polite society has declared racial epithets taboo, in private, black and white communities (mostly socially segregated) harbor deep resentments. On one side is the feeling that society is endemically racist. The white establishment cannot be relied upon to do anything to help the black underclass if it means compromising its own hold on power.
Problem that this issue presents to Society: It would be a tragedy if Barack Obama's speech, 'A More Perfect Union', were remembered only as a tactical bid to smother a controversy in an election campaign. Because of the black and white controversy stated.

Name of Article: If you can't handle being threatened by a child, maybe you shouldn't be a teacher.
Area of Impact: Education
Ethical Issue Involved: It has become the norm for many parents who would rather criticize their child's teacher than admit that their own child is in anyway wrong.
Problem that this issue presents to Society: Children threaten their teachers and prevent them from teaching the class by constantly disrupting, and interfering with what the teacher is saying.
"I don't understand why you became a teacher, if you can't handle getting threatened by a child."
Even with the constant complaints from the teachers, nothing seems to be done

Name of Article: Depression, Cigarettes and Negative Ions
Area of Impact: Health
Ethical Issue Involved: smokers are generally more prone towards depression than non smokers. How can employers combat this and help employees be as productive as they can be? The ethical issue in this article is that employers are trying to help the employees by instructing/informing them the facts about depression and how smoking may be a vital cause.
Problem that this issue presents to Society: The problem that this issue presents to society is shown through studies that regular smokers have lower monoamine oxidase A and B activity. These enzymes serve many functions in the body, one being the regulation of moods. Depression has been shown to increase when dependant smokers quit using nicotine. The ups and downs of nicotine cravings further contribute to productivity loss. When a smoker tries and fails to quit, depression increases.

This portfolio that addresses the issue of the new Google phone dominating the mobile market, is very broad with a lot of angles to attack. Google is taking all the precautions needed before releasing their first mobile phone into the market. With more than thirty other companies involved in the creation of this mobile it is clear that its release will cause a riot in the mobile world. This affect will cause businesses to suffer and people to lose jobs, if it comes to a point were other business will become unsuccessful because they wont be able to adapt to the rapid development that is occurring in the mobile world.
This development in technology will force other companies to consider using voice over Internet protocol, seeing that it is cheaper and more efficient. Though in the long run there may be issues with the Internet speed and capacity and if it’s able to carry out all the frequencies that go through. The new developed features hat are in the Gphone will force competitors to create a better and more efficient mobile therefore there are positive and negative aspects to the new Gphone.

This portfolio addresses the issue of predicting that the new Google phone doesn’t dominate the mobile telephone market. The majority of the mobile phone related businesses will be affected, and therefore lose a lot of customers which may result in them shutting down. Other companies fear that once the Google phone is released it’s going to dominate the mobile market. The largest internet company in the world.
The positive aspects of this mobile being launched to the market is that google will be able to use its resources to input the best applications possible for the buyers. As for the negative aspects, other mobile phone companies will be affected by the sales, and they wil have to update their phones with the latest trends.
As for the ethical issue in this case is that people want the best therefore they will get the best. With the majority of the mobile phone buyers getting google phones the market will get drastically affected and people will lose their jobs, there will be an unbalance in the market.
the impact on society if Google improves the mobile phone
The society's role in the future of Google is important because they can influence the company's decisions, and trends in society can make Google develop new products such as the Google phone. This mobile help society in many ways with some of it’s applications such as the GMaps, it’s an application that connect to a GPS receiver over bluetooth or use internal GPS features on some phones in order to automatically display the map for your current position.

The positive impact of the Google phone on society is that Google is going to influence the market quite a bit by organizing the open handset alliance(the first complete, open, and free mobile platform) and other open architecture initiatives. Although some are predicting high standards of device security with Android, and the team working on the platform are busy publicizing the high-level architecture that puts security under the remit of the Linux processes rather than VM, that hasn’t stopped anti-virus companies issuing ominous warnings about a spike in cell phone malware once handsets start hitting the market. (Carew 2007) Their concerns are that Android’s Linux-base will more easily facilitate virus authors, but that they’re developing a retail product to help prevent against it.
“The Google Phone platform will enable users to more easily access the Internet and download applications, which is great - but it will also encourage the hacking community to make new and more virulent strains of attacks” (Mills 2007)
The most serious problem in this case is that the technology research for the Google phone is very expensive, therefore before producing it they are testing some applications to the public see their reaction then decide weather it’s worth it to continue with the development of the phone. Making the Google phone is a very big risk for the company.
A possible Google Phone, today the Internet search giant revealed is plans for a move into the mobile world. (Smith, 2007) The bad news is that there is no Google Phone, according to Andy Rubin, the company's director of mobile platforms. The company's good news is that Google does have a plan for mobile--and a far-reaching one at that. The company announced that it is launching Android, a platform for mobile devices that includes an operating system, a user interface, and applications. The system is designed to combat the problems that developers face with mobile phones: that every phone is radically different in terms of its specifications, and applications usually have to be redesigned for each individual model of phone. (Carew 2007)

Dealing with America's largest mobile companies, which keep control of devices and features, could force the Web search leader to make concessions that cut into future revenue from wireless, an area Google has long said would be to growth. (Carew 2007)
If Google had wanted to shake up the wireless world, it certainly found the way to do it. First, Google questioned what it calls the closed nature of operator networks and the devices used on them; even suggesting it might spend $4.6 billion to buy spectrum to use for a nationwide network. (Mills 2007) Next, it promoted a handset software system it says will level the playing field and make the wireless Internet more widely available. With a leap into software for mobile devices, Google has a chance to control the way you look at the Internet.
Eric Schmidt, Google’s chairman and CEO, states that there are more mobile phone users in the world than there are people with a computer. therefore he’s done a number of deals to get Google applications and services into phones on carrier networks. Google joins the contest for mobile access to the Internet with its Android software. Android is the name of Google’s weapon to bring what Schmidt calls “a whole new mobile experience” to consumers. (Smith, 2007) Google might design an entire phone with partners, or offer software that would include its current services such as maps and e-mail. As for the technology aspect Google will be using mobile phones that go directly through the internet (VOIP), buying those television frequencies and using them to their advantage was a smart move seeing that Google is looking to dominate the Mobile market. Using those frequencies will also help because it will cut down the cost tremendously.
